Sweat equity projects are affordable home improvement projects that can be done at a low cost with a little bit of elbow grease. Here are a few ideas that can be done in a weekend.

  1.  Paint or stain kitchen cabinets. To give your kitchen a face-lift, remove cabinet doors and drawers. Paint or stain them in the basement, garage or covered porch. The cabinet bases can be painted in place. (White cabinets never go out of style if you're looking for the best resale value.) Consider changing out hardware for a kitchen that will look brand new!

  2. Replace or install tile. Laying tile is so labor intensive that you can save a lot of money by installing it yourself. The work requires very few tools and there are many online tutorials to help you get started.

  3. Install and finish trim or crown molding. This project is quick and can add a beautiful finishing touch that buyers will appreciate whenever you choose to sell your home in the future.

Nothing feels better than not only saving money on a home project by doing it yourself, but feeling that sense of pride knowing you were the one that built that coffee table, installed those new blinds, repainted the guest room, or added a fruit tree in the backyard. And why not have pride in your home? After all, you worked hard to be where you are today, and these small updates and personal touches will go a long way toward increasing the perceived value by future buyers.
